Further to our blog piece about new domains for the New Year, it would appear that many keen website owners have already taken our advice. New statistics suggest that more than 6100 domain names were registered during December 2013 containing the phrase ‘2014’.

Romance is in the air

Romantic 2014 domain namesMany of these registrations have been made by individuals preparing for large life events in the coming year. To coincide with their Christmas engagements, many couples have already begun registering domain names to announce and commemorate their nuptials. Pitmanwedding2014.com and matthewandjessica2014.com are two such examples.

Dubious 2014 domain names

Many of the other 2014 domain registrations have been far less innocent. Dozens of new addresses have been created apparently by scammers keen to cash in on successful brand names. Reebokshoes2014.com, cheaptimberlandboots2014.com and replicapradabag2014.com were all registered during December 2013 – none of them by the actual trademark or brand holder. What the registrants hope to do with these new domain names is unclear, but it’s safe to assume they are attempting to piggyback off the success of established brands in some way.

A 2013 anomaly

The most curious observation of the December domain registrations was how many domain names containing ‘2013’ were registered as we hurtled towards the end of the year. The reasons behind domain name registrations are not always easy to understand, but it is possible that individuals have saved the addresses for use on some kind of memento website, commemorating important personal events during the year.
