The decision to cancel the proposal comes at the end of a three month consultation period with business and other Internet users in the UK. The survey found that although shorter web addresses (URLs) were desirable, they may be confusing to people used to the current .co.uk format – particularly as both address formats would continue to run alongside each other.

Other plans had included the use of a “trust mark” type scheme intended to prevent fraudulent websites and to protect general Internet users. However, the implementation of such an idea was greeted with general skepticism as to whether it would function as promised.

The .UK URL has not been completely removed from future prospects, as new international guidelines regarding domain names are due to be implemented later this year. In future, businesses will be able to register virtually any extension and web address combination for their website address. Address such as me.mysite will become available, re-opening the potential for .uk variants.
